Elderton Wines, a family-owned winery in the Barossa Valley, has been crafting premium wines since the 1980s. Established by the Ashmead family, the estate is renowned for its old-vine Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and iconic single-vineyard expressions. The Grand Tourer Shiraz is a tribute to the great touring cars of the past, designed to be bold, expressive, and full of power while maintaining elegance and drinkability.
Sourced from premium Barossa vineyards, the 2022 vintage benefits from the region’s warm climate, allowing Shiraz to reach optimal ripeness while retaining balance. The vines grow in deep alluvial soils with patches of ironstone, contributing richness and structure. The wine is matured in a combination of seasoned and new French oak to enhance complexity without overpowering the vibrant fruit.
Appearance: Deep purple with an almost opaque core, showing youthful vibrancy. The rim has a magenta tinge, indicating its freshness. Viscosity is high, with thick, slow-moving tears forming on the glass, hinting at the wine’s generous body and alcohol. Light glides smoothly over its surface, accentuating its intensity.
Aroma: Intense blackberries, ripe plums, and dark cherries leap from the glass, intertwined with dark chocolate, black pepper, and sweet spice. Subtle hints of vanilla, smoky oak, and crushed violets add further depth and complexity.
Taste: A rich and opulent palate bursting with concentrated black fruits—blackcurrant, blueberry, and mulberry—balanced by a core of fresh acidity. Notes of dark cocoa, clove, and star anise emerge alongside silky yet firm tannins, adding structure and depth.
Finish: Long and lingering, with dark berry compote, sweet spice, and a touch of toasted oak. The tannins are plush, giving the wine a velvety texture and a persistent, warming close.
Food Pairing: Chargrilled ribeye with chimichurri, slow-braised beef cheeks with star anise, barbecued lamb cutlets with rosemary and garlic, aged Gouda, and smoky grilled portobello mushrooms with balsamic glaze.
