d’Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2019
d’Arenberg is an iconic winery from McLaren Vale, South Australia, founded in 1912. Known for its distinctive, terroir-driven wines and the unconventional, artistic approach of the Osborn family, the Dead Arm Shiraz has earned international acclaim for its concentration, elegance, and longevity. The 2019 vintage reflects a classic McLaren Vale year, with warm days and cool nights producing deeply ripe fruit balanced by vibrant acidity.
The vineyard is planted on ironstone-rich soils that stress the vines, particularly the old Shiraz vines used for this wine, which are subject to “dead arm” disease that naturally limits yield but intensifies flavour. Hand-harvested grapes are partially destemmed, then fermented in open-top fermenters with gentle extraction, followed by maturation in seasoned and new French and American oak for 18 months to develop structure and complexity.
Appearance Deep, inky ruby with garnet edges, almost opaque at the core. Slow, dense legs cling to the glass, hinting at the wine’s power, concentration, and full-bodied richness.
Aroma A complex bouquet of dark blackberry, plum, and black cherry is layered with dried herbs, smoked meat, subtle spice, and hints of earthy forest floor and chocolate.
Taste Full-bodied and structured, the palate is concentrated with dark fruit flavours balanced by velvety tannins, integrated oak, and underlying minerality. Layers of complexity unfold with every sip, showing poise and harmony.
Finish Long and persistent, leaving notes of dark fruit, black pepper, and a gentle smoky nuance that lingers beautifully.
Food Pairing Slow-roasted lamb shoulder enhances the wine’s richness and depth. A hearty mushroom and truffle risotto also complements its earthy undertones and structured tannins.
