Pegasus Bay is one of New Zealand’s most respected wineries, based in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. Known for their expressive, age-worthy Rieslings, Pegasus Bay’s ‘Bel Canto’ is made only in exceptional years when the fruit develops high levels of ripeness and natural acidity. The 2017 vintage was characterised by a long, cool growing season, allowing for extended hang time and the development of complex aromatics, vibrant acidity, and a rich, textural palate.

Sourced from mature vines rooted in free-draining glacial gravels with limestone influence, this Riesling benefits from a terroir that enhances minerality and depth. The grapes were left to achieve optimal ripeness, including a portion with noble botrytis, which adds layers of concentration and complexity. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged on lees, the wine retains purity, structure, and impressive ageing potential.

Appearance Deep golden straw with brilliant clarity. The wine’s viscosity is evident, with slow-moving legs suggesting richness and concentration. The luminous depth of colour hints at both ripeness and bottle development.

Aroma Intensely perfumed, with layers of ripe citrus, apricot, and white peach interwoven with floral notes of honeysuckle and jasmine. Hints of beeswax, lime zest, and crushed slate add complexity, while a touch of kerosene and toasted almond reflect its evolving character.

Taste Powerful yet precise, with a dynamic interplay of ripe citrus, golden apple, and dried apricot. A rich, textural mouthfeel is balanced by piercing acidity, giving the wine tension and drive. Notes of honeycomb, spiced pear, and flinty minerality add layers of depth, while a saline edge enhances freshness and persistence.

Finish Exceptionally long, with lingering notes of citrus oil, crushed rock, and a subtle umami richness. The acidity ensures both vibrancy and longevity, promising further evolution in bottle.

Food Pairing Seared scallops with a saffron and citrus beurre blanc highlight the wine’s layered texture and bright acidity. Aged Comté cheese brings out its mineral complexity and honeyed depth, creating a seamless pairing.
