Au Bon Climat Oregon Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019 is a beautiful expression of Pinot Noir from one of the most respected producers in the United States. Jim Clendenen, who founded Au Bon Climat in 1982, is renowned for his commitment to creating Burgundian-style wines in California. While most of Au Bon Climat's production is centered around Santa Barbara County, this particular wine is a standout from Oregon, a region celebrated for its Pinot Noir.

The terroir of Oregon, specifically the Willamette Valley, is similar to that of Burgundy, with cool, wet weather and volcanic and sedimentary soils that contribute to the complex flavours in the wines. The 2019 vintage in Oregon experienced a relatively cool growing season, allowing for extended ripening periods which contributed to the development of complex aromas and flavours.

Appearance: This Pinot Noir has a bright, translucent ruby colour with a slight garnet hue around the edges, typical of a wine that has started to mature slightly.

Aroma: On the nose, it opens with elegant aromas of red cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, intertwined with earthy notes of forest floor, mushrooms, and a hint of spice like clove and cinnamon. There is also a subtle floral note of rose petals that adds complexity.

Taste: The palate is vibrant and well-balanced, with flavours of red berries like cherry and raspberry complemented by hints of plum and a touch of savoury herbs. The wine has a medium body with fine-grained tannins and a lively acidity that gives it a refreshing edge. The influence of oak is gentle, adding a layer of vanilla and a touch of toastiness.

Finish: It concludes with a long, elegant finish marked by persistent fruit flavours and a hint of minerality, reflecting its Oregonian roots.

Pairing: This wine would be a perfect match for a dish like duck breast with cherry glaze. The wine’s acidity and fruit-forward profile will enhance the rich flavours of the duck while the earthy notes will complement the dish's savoury components.
