Frescobaldi Gorgona Bianco 2020
Frescobaldi, one of Tuscany’s most historic and respected wine producers, is known for its commitment to excellence and tradition. The Frescobaldi Gorgona Bianco 2020 is a particularly unique wine, as it comes from Gorgona Island, the smallest island in the Tuscan Archipelago. Produced in collaboration with the island’s penal colony, this project helps prisoners learn viticulture while crafting high-quality wines. Gorgona Bianco is a blend of Vermentino and Ansonica, two native varieties that thrive in the island’s Mediterranean climate. The result is a white wine with fresh, saline minerality, reflecting its maritime terroir.
Appearance: Pale straw yellow with greenish reflections, showing brightness and clarity.
Aroma: The nose is fresh and aromatic, with notes of citrus, lemon zest, and green apple, alongside floral hints of white blossom and Mediterranean herbs. There are subtle saline and mineral undertones, reflecting the wine’s coastal origin.
Taste: On the palate, this wine is crisp and refreshing, with flavours of citrus, green apple, and pear, balanced by a distinct minerality and a touch of herbal notes like rosemary and thyme. The wine’s vibrant acidity adds to its liveliness, while the saline quality provides depth and complexity.
Finish: The finish is long and clean, with lingering citrus and mineral notes, leaving a refreshing and savoury aftertaste.
Food pairing: Frescobaldi Gorgona Bianco pairs beautifully with seafood dishes such as grilled fish, prawns, or shellfish, where the wine’s acidity and saline character complement the briny flavours. It also works well with light pasta dishes featuring fresh herbs, or salads with goat cheese, where its freshness balances the richness of the cheese.
