Giuseppe Quintarelli is one of Italy’s most revered winemakers, known for producing wines of extraordinary depth, complexity, and longevity. Based in Veneto, the estate has become legendary for its meticulous approach to winemaking, particularly through the appassimento method, where grapes are dried before fermentation to intensify their flavours. Alzero is one of Quintarelli’s most unique and sought-after wines—an opulent Bordeaux-style blend crafted using the same method as Amarone. Made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, Alzero is an intensely concentrated, seductive wine that rivals some of the greatest reds in the world.

The estate’s vineyards, located in the heart of Valpolicella, benefit from limestone and volcanic soils that lend structure and minerality to the wine. The grapes are carefully harvested and left to dry for several months, allowing sugars and flavours to concentrate. Fermentation takes place slowly over several weeks, followed by extended ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels, where the wine develops incredible depth, texture, and complexity.

Appearance: Deep, almost opaque garnet with a ruby-red core and a slight amber rim, reflecting both its richness and evolving character. The viscosity is remarkable, with thick, slow-moving legs coating the glass, hinting at its concentration and power.

Aroma: Incredibly complex and intoxicating, with layers of blackcurrant, ripe plum, and dried cherry, intertwined with dark chocolate, espresso, and balsamic notes. Hints of tobacco, sweet spice, and cedar emerge, alongside subtle floral and earthy undertones, creating a multi-dimensional bouquet.

Taste: Velvety and full-bodied, with a rich, seamless texture. Bold flavours of black cherry, cassis, and fig unfold, balanced by fresh acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. Layers of mocha, liquorice, and exotic spice add further depth, while finely integrated tannins provide structure and ageing potential. The sheer power of the wine is matched by its elegance and refinement.

Finish: Exceptionally long and lingering, with dark fruit, cocoa, and a savoury, balsamic character that leaves a lasting impression. The complexity and balance suggest decades of evolution ahead.

Food Pairing: Slow-cooked venison with juniper and dark berry sauce, where the wine’s richness enhances the deep, gamey flavours.
Aged blue cheese, such as Gorgonzola or Stilton, creating a contrast between the wine’s intense fruit and the cheese’s bold, salty profile.
