Giuseppe Quintarelli, Alzero 2015
Giuseppe Quintarelli, often hailed as the "Maestro del Veneto," was renowned for his meticulous craftsmanship and dedication to traditional winemaking techniques. His estate, located in the Veneto region of Italy, has been producing some of the country's most esteemed wines for generations. The 'Alzero' is one of Quintarelli's signature wines, showcasing his innovative approach by applying the appassimento method—traditionally used for Amarone—to Bordeaux varietals, resulting in a wine of remarkable depth and complexity.
The 2015 'Alzero' is predominantly composed of Cabernet Franc, with smaller portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The grapes are harvested early, at the end of August and beginning of September, and then carefully selected. After harvest, the grapes undergo a drying process similar to that used for Amarone, where they are laid out to dry until mid-December. This appassimento technique concentrates the sugars and flavours, contributing to the wine's richness. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for two to three years in French barrels, then racked into Slavonian oak barrels for an additional four years, allowing for further development and integration of flavours
