La Trava is a boutique winery in Piemonte, dedicated to producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that showcase the unique characteristics of the region’s native grapes. Their Barbera d’Alba 2019 is a bold yet elegant interpretation of Barbera, sourced from vineyards with limestone and clay-rich soils that contribute to its depth and complexity. Aged in a combination of stainless steel and oak, this wine strikes a perfect balance between freshness and structure, highlighting Barbera’s naturally high acidity while adding layers of richness.

Appearance: Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, indicating both its vibrancy and slight evolution. The wine has excellent clarity, with slow-moving legs suggesting a well-structured body and balanced alcohol.

Aroma: Rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe black cherries, redcurrants, and plums. Floral hints of violets and a touch of dried herbs add elegance, while subtle notes of sweet spice, vanilla, and cocoa from oak ageing provide depth and warmth. As the wine opens, a delicate earthiness and a whisper of liquorice emerge, enhancing its complexity.

Taste: Juicy and structured, with a core of ripe red and dark berry flavours balanced by Barbera’s signature acidity. Sour cherry, blackberry, and pomegranate lead into subtle layers of black pepper, nutmeg, and a touch of dark chocolate. The tannins are smooth yet present, adding structure without overpowering the vibrant fruit. A slight mineral note runs through the palate, reflecting the vineyard’s terroir.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering red fruit, spice, and a hint of earthiness. The wine’s acidity keeps it fresh and lively, while the well-integrated tannins add elegance. A final touch of liquorice and dried herbs rounds out the finish, making each sip both refreshing and complex.

Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops with rosemary, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness of the meat while complementing its savoury notes. Also an excellent match with porcini mushroom risotto, as the wine’s bright fruit and earthy undertones enhance the depth of the dish.
