Bouchard Finlayson, a boutique winery in South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, is renowned for crafting elegant and distinctive wines that reflect the region’s cool maritime climate. The ‘Hannibal’ 2021 is a unique and innovative blend, inspired by Italian varietals, combining Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre. This masterful blend showcases the estate’s dedication to creativity and precision, resulting in a wine that is both complex and harmonious.

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, with its rolling hills, clay-rich soils, and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, provides ideal growing conditions for the diverse grapes used in this blend. The 2021 vintage benefited from a mild, consistent growing season, allowing the fruit to achieve balanced ripeness and vibrant natural acidity.

Appearance: Deep ruby with a garnet edge, highlighting its youthful vibrancy and layered intensity.

Aroma: The nose is captivating and multi-layered, with red and dark fruit aromas of cherry, raspberry, and black plum, interwoven with savoury notes of dried herbs, leather, and tobacco. Hints of spice, such as cinnamon and clove, and a subtle earthy undertone add depth.

Taste: Medium-bodied and elegant, the palate reveals a harmonious medley of red berries, cranberry, and blackberry, complemented by savoury elements like dried tomato, wild herbs, and a touch of black olive. Silky tannins and bright acidity provide balance and structure, while a gentle oak influence adds nuances of vanilla and spice.

Finish: The finish is long and sophisticated, with lingering notes of cherry, spice, and a touch of mineral-driven freshness, leaving a polished and satisfying impression.

Food Pairing: The ‘Hannibal’ 2021 is an excellent match for slow-cooked osso buco, as its savoury and fruity profile complements the richness of the dish. It also pairs beautifully with wild mushroom tagliatelle, where its earthy and herbal notes harmonise with the umami flavours of the mushrooms.
