Bouchard Finlayson KMG Chardonnay 2023
Bouchard Finlayson, situated in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley of South Africa, is renowned for crafting elegant cool-climate wines that capture the essence of this picturesque region. The Kaaimansgat (KMG) Chardonnay 2023 comes from a single high-altitude vineyard in the Overberg region, known as Kaaimansgat, or "Crocodile’s Lair." This vineyard’s unique terroir, with its cool temperatures, rocky soils, and long growing season, is ideal for producing Chardonnays of finesse, complexity, and longevity.
The 2023 vintage experienced a near-perfect growing season, allowing the fruit to develop vibrant acidity and concentrated flavours. Fermentation in French oak barrels, combined with extended lees contact, adds richness and depth while preserving the wine’s natural freshness.
Appearance: Pale gold with a brilliant clarity and subtle green reflections, reflecting its youth and vitality.
Aroma: The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, and green apple, with subtle floral notes of orange blossom. Nuances of toasted almond, vanilla, and a hint of flint add depth and elegance.
Taste: Medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, the palate opens with vibrant flavours of lemon curd, nectarine, and crisp apple, supported by a creamy texture from lees aging. The wine’s bright acidity provides energy and precision, while the oak influence is restrained, contributing gentle notes of hazelnut and a touch of spice.
Finish: The finish is long and refined, with lingering citrus and stone fruit flavours, underpinned by a chalky minerality and a hint of toasted oak.
Food Pairing: The KMG Chardonnay 2023 pairs excellently with grilled lobster drizzled with lemon butter, where its creamy texture and citrus notes enhance the dish’s richness. It also complements roast chicken with garlic and thyme, harmonising with the savoury flavours and adding a touch of elegance to the meal.
