Kershaw 'Clonal Selection' Elgin Pinot Noir 2020 is a distinguished red wine from South Africa's Elgin region, crafted by the esteemed Kershaw Wines. Founded by Master of Wine Richard Kershaw in 2012, the winery is celebrated for producing clonally selected, site-specific, cool-climate wines that express the unique terroir of their origins. The 'Clonal Selection' range focuses on meticulously chosen clones and vineyard parcels, showcasing the diversity and potential of South African viticulture.

The 2020 vintage is composed of 100% Pinot Noir, utilizing French clones PN115, PN777, PN113, and PN667. These clones are cultivated across eight distinct parcels within the Elgin region, each contributing unique characteristics to the final blend. The cool climate of Elgin, combined with diverse soil types, provides an ideal environment for Pinot Noir, allowing for slow ripening and the development of complex flavours. The winemaking process involves handpicking the grapes into small lug baskets, followed by manual sorting and destemming. Fermentation includes partial whole-bunch fermentation to enhance complexity, and the wine is aged for approximately 10-11 months in French oak barrels, with an average of 25.3% being new oak. The maturation process also includes the use of breathable eggs, contributing to the wine's texture and depth.

Appearance: Bright ruby-red with a translucent core and a subtle garnet rim, suggesting a wine of elegance and structure. The wine’s clarity and vibrancy indicate purity, while the fine legs hint at its delicate texture and well-balanced acidity.

Aroma: Expressive and inviting, with captivating floral notes underscored by purity, focus, and freshness. Bright red fruit flavours of black cherry, redcurrant, and wild strawberry are layered with hints of dried herbs, savoury spice, and a touch of orange zest. A mineral-driven mid-palate adds tension and depth, while the fine-grained tannins provide structure without overpowering the delicate fruit. A whisper of well-integrated oak imparts subtle notes of vanilla and nutmeg, enhancing the complexity without overshadowing the wine’s vibrant freshness.
