Coates Wines, under the guidance of Duane Coates, is renowned for its meticulous approach to winemaking, creating small-batch wines that beautifully express the terroir of South Australia. ‘The Reserve’ Syrah comes from carefully selected, low-yielding vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, a region known for producing cooler-climate, elegant expressions of Syrah. The 2018 vintage was marked by ideal conditions, allowing for excellent ripening while maintaining the fresh acidity and balance that are hallmarks of Coates' Syrah.

Appearance: Deep ruby with purple edges, showing both intensity and vibrancy, indicative of its youth and concentration.

Aroma: A beautifully complex nose, with layers of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plum. These dark fruits are complemented by savoury notes of black pepper, dried herbs, and smoked meats. Subtle hints of violet, liquorice, and dark chocolate add complexity, alongside well-integrated oak, contributing notes of vanilla and sweet spice.

Taste: Full-bodied yet refined, with concentrated flavours of dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry, and blueberry—balanced by savoury, earthy tones of black olive, black pepper, and a touch of leather. The acidity is vibrant, keeping the wine fresh and lively, while the fine, well-structured tannins give it a silky mouthfeel. The oak influence is subtle, adding a layer of spice and mocha without overshadowing the wine’s fruit and savoury elements.

Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, pepper, and a hint of minerality. The tannins are polished, and the fresh acidity ensures a clean, elegant finish with great potential for further aging.

Food Pairing: This elegant Syrah pairs perfectly with grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, where the wine’s savoury notes and dark fruit complement the herbaceous richness of the lamb. It would also be an excellent match for slow-roasted pork shoulder or chargrilled vegetables, where the wine’s spice and acidity balance the dish’s depth and smokiness.
