Collefrenato 2019 Super Marchigian (Montepulciano, Merlot, Cab. Sauv.)
Castrum Morisci, an esteemed winery in the Marche region of Italy, is celebrated for its dedication to organic viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques. Their Collefrenato 2019 Super Marchigian is a distinctive blend of 50% Montepulciano, 35% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the rich diversity of the region’s terroir.
The vineyards are situated at an elevation of 200 metres above sea level, benefiting from an eastern exposure that ensures optimal sunlight. The clay-loam soils provide a fertile foundation for the vines, contributing to the wine’s complexity and depth. Harvesting is conducted manually, with grapes carefully selected and collected in small boxes to preserve their integrity. A notable feature of Collefrenato’s production is the use of amphorae for spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing in amphorae with bâtonnage for approximately six months, and an additional six months in barriques. This method imparts unique characteristics to the wine, enhancing its flavour profile and texture.
Appearance: The wine exhibits a vibrant ruby red colour with deep purple highlights, indicating its youthful intensity and structure. When swirled, the medium-high viscosity suggests a well-rounded body, with slow-moving legs that hint at its richness and ageing potential. The depth of colour is striking, with a near-opaque core and a gradually fading rim, offering a glimpse of its evolving complexity.
Aroma: The nose is greeted with intense and complex aromas, featuring floral notes of violets and fruity black cherries. These scents are complemented by hints of undergrowth, warm spices like clove and nutmeg, and subtle toasted nuances, adding depth and elegance to the bouquet. As the wine opens, layers of balsamic, dark chocolate, and a touch of tobacco emerge, further enriching the aromatic experience.
Taste: On the palate, the wine is bold yet balanced, with a refined complexity that mirrors the aromatic profile. The fusion of ripe blackberries, sour cherries, and wild plums is seamlessly intertwined with nuances of black pepper, vanilla, and a whisper of leather. The tannins are round and enveloping, lending structure without overpowering the fruit. A bright acidity ensures freshness, while a delicate oak influence adds warmth and finesse.
Finish: The finish is long, persistent, and layered, with the initial burst of black cherry and spice slowly giving way to earthy, smoky undertones. The lingering minerality, combined with a touch of cocoa and dried herbs, creates a refined yet powerful aftertaste. As the flavours fade, a subtle hint of balsamic and graphite remains, leaving a polished and lasting impression that continues to evolve on the palate. The balanced acidity and well-integrated tannins ensure the wine remains fresh and structured, promising excellent ageing potential.
Food Pairing: The Collefrenato 2019 Super Marchigian pairs exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as stewed lamb liver, fresh pasta with duck sauce, and oven-roasted pork shank. It also complements aged cheeses and grilled meats, enhancing their rich and savoury elements. A pairing with slow-braised beef short ribs or wild game would further highlight the wine’s depth and complexity. Serving at a temperature of 18-21°C is recommended to fully appreciate its vibrant flavours and elegant profile.
The Collefrenato 2019 Super Marchigian exemplifies Castrum Morisci’s commitment to crafting wines that capture the essence of Marche’s terroir, offering a distinctive and pleasurable tasting experience that balances power, elegance, and depth
