Constantia Glen FIVE 2021
Constantia Glen FIVE 2021 is the flagship red blend from Constantia Glen, a boutique wine estate nestled in South Africa's historic Constantia Valley. Renowned for its cool maritime climate and meticulous vineyard practices, the estate crafts wines that embody elegance and complexity.
The 2021 vintage is a harmonious blend of the five classic Bordeaux varieties: 27% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot, and 11% Malbec. This composition reflects the estate's commitment to producing wines with depth and balance. The 2021 growing season was notably cool, leading to a slow and even ripening process. This allowed for the development of concentrated flavours and vibrant acidity, promising excellent ageing potential. Post-harvest, the wine matured for 19 months in 75% new and 25% second-fill 225-litre French oak barrels, enhancing its complexity and structure.
Appearance: Deep ruby with a garnet-tinged rim, indicating both youthful vibrancy and early signs of development. The core is almost opaque, suggesting concentration and ageing potential. Swirling the glass reveals slow-moving, well-defined legs, highlighting the wine’s richness and structure.
Aroma: Intense and layered, with notes of Morello cherries, ripe blackcurrant, and black plums leading the way. Floral hints of violets and dried lavender intertwine with savoury undertones of dried herbs, cedar, and graphite. Subtle nuances of dark cocoa, cigar box, and baking spice add further complexity.
Taste: A powerful yet refined palate, opening with concentrated dark fruit flavours of blackberry, cassis, and black cherry. Silky yet structured tannins provide a firm backbone, while bright acidity lifts the mid-palate, ensuring balance and elegance. Oak influence imparts gentle touches of vanilla, nutmeg, and subtle toast, integrating seamlessly without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Exceptionally long and refined, with lingering notes of dark berries, earthy spice, and fine-grained tannins that gradually soften. A hint of crushed rock minerality and dried tobacco leaves a lasting impression, reinforcing its complexity and ageing potential.
Food Pairing: Slow-braised beef short ribs, herb-crusted lamb, or grilled venison enhance the wine’s bold fruit and spice. For a vegetarian option, wild mushroom risotto or roasted root vegetables with rosemary and thyme complement its earthy and savoury undertones. Best decanted before serving to allow full expression of aromas and structure
