Devotus Pinot Noir 2023
Devotus is a boutique winery located in Martinborough, New Zealand, founded by Don and Valerie Buchanan. The estate is known for producing high-quality Pinot Noir with a focus on small-batch, sustainable viticulture. Their wines reflect the unique terroir of Martinborough, one of New Zealand’s premier regions for Pinot Noir. The Devotus Pinot Noir 2023 is a single-vineyard wine that epitomises the estate’s philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard’s natural character to be expressed in the wine.
Martinborough’s terroir is defined by its free-draining alluvial soils, with layers of gravel and silt, perfect for growing Pinot Noir. The region’s cool, dry climate and long growing season help the grapes develop ripe flavours while maintaining fresh acidity. Devotus Pinot Noir is hand-harvested, wild-fermented, and aged in French oak, allowing the wine to develop complexity while retaining purity and balance.
Appearance: Bright, luminous ruby-red with vibrant purple reflections at the rim, showing youthful exuberance. Exceptional clarity, with graceful transparency and medium-bodied viscosity; the wine gently coats the glass, forming refined, slow-moving tears that speak to its elegant structure
Aroma: Beautifully aromatic with layers of ripe red fruit such as cherry, strawberry, and raspberry. These are complemented by delicate floral notes of rose petals, earthy undertones of wet forest floor, and a subtle hint of spice from the oak.
Taste: The palate is expressive, offering juicy red fruit flavours of cherry, cranberry, and raspberry, with hints of clove, cinnamon, and dried herbs. The tannins are fine and silky, giving the wine an elegant mouthfeel, while the bright acidity provides freshness and balance.
Finish: The finish is long and smooth, with lingering red fruit, gentle spice, and a touch of minerality, reflecting the wine’s precision and purity.
Food Pairing: This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck, where the wine’s acidity balances the richness of the meat while the red fruit enhances the dish’s savoury flavours. It also works well with wild mushroom risotto, with the earthy mushrooms complementing the wine’s subtle forest floor notes and fine tannins.
