Bouchard Finlayson, Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2022
Bouchard Finlayson, a boutique winery nestled in South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, is celebrated for its innovative and high-quality wines. The Hannibal 2021 is a distinctive blend inspired by the classic Italian grape varieties Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, first introduced with the 2001 vintage. The name "Hannibal" symbolises the historical connection between Africa and Europe, reminiscent of the Carthaginian general Hannibal's famed crossing of the Alps.
The 2021 vintage experienced favourable conditions, with dry and cool weather prevailing during the harvest period. This climate allowed for phenolic ripeness to outpace sugar accumulation in the berries, resulting in wines with balanced natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels. The final blend comprises 41% Sangiovese, 26% Nebbiolo, 14% Shiraz, 11% Pinot Noir, 5% Barbera, and 3% Mourvèdre. Each varietal was vinified separately, undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, before being lightly filtered and bottled in July 2022.
Appearance: The wine exhibits a vibrant ruby-red hue with a translucent rim, indicating its youth and potential for ageing. The core is a deeper shade of garnet, reflecting its layered complexity, while the clarity and brilliance in the glass suggest meticulous winemaking. Swirling reveals slow-forming legs, hinting at a medium-bodied structure with refined tannins.
Aroma: An intriguing bouquet of fresh red cherries and strawberries greets the nose, complemented by subtle notes of cedar wood, charcuterie, and tobacco. As the wine opens, hints of dried violets and earthy undertones emerge, adding complexity and depth. A delicate spiciness, reminiscent of cinnamon and cracked black pepper, lingers in the background, enhancing the wine’s overall aromatic appeal.
Taste: On the palate, the wine is lithe and poised, showcasing a harmonious blend of red fruit flavours, including cranberry and redcurrant. The presence of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo imparts a characteristic Italian mouthfeel, with firm yet elegant tannins. A delicate brick-dust grip underscores the wine's inner power, while whispers of spice and cured meat add layers of interest. Hints of blood orange and balsamic reduction weave through the mid-palate, contributing to its layered complexity.
Finish: The finish is long and refined, with lingering notes of red berries, fig, and quince. As the tannins soften, they leave behind a velvety texture, gradually unveiling more savoury nuances of leather, dried herbs, and a touch of smoky oak. A whisper of dried rose petals and graphite minerality lingers in the background, offering an elegant contrast to the wine’s fruit-forward nature. The well-balanced acidity ensures a persistent, mouth-watering sensation, encouraging further ageing potential and leaving a sophisticated aftertaste that evolves with each sip.
Food Pairing: The Hannibal 2021's versatility makes it an excellent companion to a range of dishes. It pairs particularly well with Indian and other spicy cuisines. Consider pairing it with a Cape vegetable biryani, where the wine’s acidity balances the richness of the dish. Mauritian seafood vindaye, with its tangy and spicy profile, complements the wine’s fruit complexity. For a simpler pairing, serve with goat’s milk cheese on brioche toast, allowing the wine’s nuanced flavours to shine. Slow-braised lamb or duck confit would also make excellent pairings, enhancing the wine’s structure and depth.
The Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2021 is a testament to the winery's dedication to crafting unique blends that honour both tradition and innovation, offering a refined and memorable tasting experience
