Oak Valley Estate, situated in the cool-climate region of Elgin, South Africa, has built a reputation for crafting elegant and expressive wines that reflect their unique terroir. Established in 1898, the estate was initially known for fruit farming before expanding into viticulture, where it has excelled in producing high-quality Chardonnay. The Groenlandberg Chardonnay 2022 is a beautifully balanced and complex expression of the grape, named after the Groenlandberg mountain range that plays a crucial role in shaping Elgin’s microclimate.

The vineyards for the Groenlandberg Chardonnay 2022 are planted on Bokkeveld shale soils, which provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine’s distinct mineral character. The cool temperatures and high-altitude vineyards ensure a long ripening period, preserving acidity while allowing rich flavours to develop. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (30% new) with partial malolactic fermentation, followed by extended lees contact, giving the wine depth, texture, and a subtle creamy complexity.

Appearance: Pale gold with flashes of green, showcasing freshness and youth. The wine’s clarity and brilliance suggest precision in winemaking, while swirling in the glass reveals slow-moving legs, hinting at a well-balanced richness and refined texture. The vibrant hue reflects both its cool-climate origins and its potential for ageing.

Aroma: Expressive and elegant, with layers of citrus zest, green apple, and ripe white peach. Subtle floral notes of honeysuckle and acacia add delicacy, while hints of toasted almond, vanilla, and wet stone bring depth. A touch of struck flint and a faint saline edge highlight the wine’s cool-climate terroir.

Taste: Silky and refined, with bright citrus and orchard fruit balanced by a creamy, textured palate. Lemon curd, crisp pear, and nectarine dominate, while the gentle oak influence introduces hints of hazelnut, brioche, and baking spice. A fine mineral streak runs through the wine, adding complexity and elegance, while vibrant acidity ensures balance and freshness.

Finish: Exceptionally long and poised, with lingering citrus zest, subtle oak spice, and a whisper of salty minerality. The wine’s crisp acidity keeps it lifted, while the creamy texture adds weight and finesse. A final note of flinty wet stone and roasted nuts lingers, ensuring a sophisticated and memorable finish.

Food Pairing:
Grilled lobster with garlic butter, where the wine’s minerality and bright acidity enhance the richness of the dish.
Lemon and herb roasted chicken, as the wine’s creamy texture and citrus-driven freshness complement the savoury, aromatic elements of the dish
