Kershaw 'Smugglers Boot' GSM 2019
Kershaw 'Smugglers Boot' GSM 2019 is a refined and expressive Rhône-style blend from Elgin, South Africa, crafted by Richard Kershaw MW, one of the country’s most respected winemakers. The Smugglers Boot series pays homage to the early pioneers of South African winemaking, who secretly brought vine cuttings into the country to establish its vineyards. This Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre blend showcases the cool-climate finesse of Elgin while maintaining the rich complexity of a classic GSM.
The 2019 vintage benefited from a long and even ripening season, allowing for excellent fruit concentration and natural acidity. Gentle vinification and ageing in French oak barrels contribute to the wine’s balance, depth, and elegant structure.
Appearance: Deep ruby with purple undertones, indicating vibrancy and youthful intensity.
Aroma: The nose is layered and inviting, with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, and plum, complemented by floral hints of violets and lavender. Subtle notes of black pepper, dried herbs, and smoky spice add complexity.
Taste: Medium-bodied and well-structured, the palate delivers juicy red and black fruit flavours, intertwined with savoury elements of black olive, rosemary, and crushed peppercorn. Fine tannins provide structure, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and elegant. Well-integrated oak adds gentle touches of vanilla, spice, and a hint of dark chocolate.
Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering red fruit, savoury spice, and a refined mineral edge, leaving a polished and harmonious impression.
Food Pairing: Kershaw 'Smugglers Boot' GSM 2019 pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, where its fruit and spice elements enhance the dish’s rich flavours. It also complements chargrilled aubergine with Middle Eastern spices, as the wine’s herbal and earthy notes harmonise with the smoky depth of the dish. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to fully open up.
