Kershaw 'Smugglers Boot' Pinot Noir 2023
Kershaw 'Smugglers Boot' Pinot Noir 2023 is a distinctive red wine from the Elgin Valley in South Africa, crafted by Kershaw Wines, founded by Richard Kershaw MW. The name Smugglers Boot pays homage to the ingenuity of early South African winemakers who smuggled grapevine cuttings into the country hidden in Wellington boots during trade embargoes. This wine celebrates that spirit by showcasing the unique terroir of Elgin, known for its cool climate and ideal conditions for Pinot Noir cultivation.
The 2023 vintage benefited from a long growing season, allowing for gradual ripening and the development of nuanced flavours. The winemaking process involved handpicking the grapes, followed by meticulous sorting to ensure only the finest berries were used. Fermentation was carried out in open-top fermenters with a gentle pigeage program, and the wine was matured in a combination of French oak barrels and breathable plastic eggs for 11 months, resulting in a complex and balanced profile.
Appearance: Light ruby with garnet highlights, showcasing the wine’s elegance and youthful vibrancy.
Aroma: The nose is aromatic and layered, featuring red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry, interwoven with floral notes of rose petal and violets. Subtle hints of dried herbs, earth, and spice, such as cinnamon and clove, add depth and intrigue.
Taste: Light to medium-bodied, the palate is silky and refined, with a vibrant core of red fruit flavours, including cranberry and sour cherry, balanced by savoury undertones of forest floor and dried thyme. Fine-grained tannins provide structure, while bright acidity keeps the wine fresh and energetic. The oak influence is delicately integrated, offering gentle notes of vanilla and a touch of toast.
Finish: The finish is long and elegant, with lingering red fruit and a hint of earthy minerality that leaves a clean and polished impression.
Food Pairing: The 'Smugglers Boot' Pinot Noir 2023 pairs beautifully with duck confit, as its red fruit and savoury notes complement the richness of the dish. It is also an excellent match for a wild mushroom tart, with the wine’s earthy character enhancing the umami flavours of the mushrooms. Best served slightly chilled to highlight its freshness and complexity.
