Matassa Olla Blanc 2023
Matassa Olla Blanc 2023 is a vibrant, textural white wine from Domaine Matassa, a pioneering natural wine producer in Roussillon, France. Founded by Tom Lubbe, Matassa is known for its organic and biodynamic farming practices, crafting wines with minimal intervention that express the unique Mediterranean terroir. Olla Blanc is a blend of Macabeu, Grenache Blanc, and Muscat, sourced from old vines rooted in limestone and schist soils, giving the wine its characteristic minerality and freshness.
The 2023 vintage benefitted from warm days and cool nights, ensuring a balance between ripe fruit and bright acidity. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in neutral vessels, this wine is unfiltered, unfined, and bottled with minimal sulphur, highlighting its raw and energetic character.
Appearance: Pale gold with a slightly hazy glow, reflecting its natural winemaking approach.
Aroma: Aromatically expressive, with notes of ripe pear, white peach, and citrus zest, intertwined with wild herbs, white flowers, and a touch of Mediterranean sea breeze. Subtle hints of honey and almond add depth.
Taste: Light to medium-bodied, the palate is fresh and textured, offering flavours of quince, lemon curd, and stone fruit, balanced by a stony minerality. A gentle phenolic grip from skin contact adds structure, while a lively acidity keeps the wine crisp and energetic.
Finish: Long and saline, with lingering citrus, floral, and nutty notes, leaving a refreshing and slightly savoury impression.
Food Pairing: Matassa Olla Blanc 2023 pairs beautifully with grilled sardines drizzled with olive oil and lemon, where its bright acidity and minerality enhance the dish’s richness. It also works well with soft goat’s cheese and honey, complementing the wine’s floral and citrus elements while balancing its subtle texture. Best enjoyed slightly chilled to capture its full vibrancy.
