Tasi, Merlot ORGNO 2016
Tasi is a winery dedicated to producing wines that express the unique terroir of Veneto, focusing on purity, balance, and depth. Their Orgno 2016 Merlot is a remarkable example of how this international variety thrives in the region, offering both power and elegance. The 2016 vintage was marked by ideal growing conditions, with warm days and cool nights allowing for slow, even ripening. This resulted in a wine with rich fruit concentration, well-integrated tannins, and excellent ageing potential.
Sourced from select vineyards in Veneto, the Merlot vines are planted in clay-limestone soils, which enhance the wine’s structure and depth while contributing to its signature smoothness. The climate, influenced by the nearby Adriatic Sea, allows for a balance between ripeness and acidity. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, followed by extended bottle ageing, this wine gains complexity, refinement, and a beautifully polished texture.
Appearance: Deep, intense ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim, showing signs of both concentration and graceful ageing. The wine displays a brilliant clarity, with slow, well-defined legs that indicate richness and a full-bodied profile. Swirling the glass enhances the visual depth, reinforcing its structure and elegance.
Aroma: Expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe black cherries, plums, and blueberries. Notes of dark chocolate, cedar, and sweet tobacco emerge, complemented by hints of vanilla, liquorice, and dried herbs. A touch of balsamic and earthy minerality adds further depth and complexity.
Taste: Velvety and well-structured, with a rich palate of dark fruit, including blackcurrant, fig, and ripe cherry. Subtle undertones of mocha, toasted oak, and spice add warmth and balance. The tannins are firm yet refined, offering structure without overpowering the wine’s natural softness. A bright acidity lifts the mid-palate, maintaining freshness and allowing the flavours to unfold with remarkable precision.
Finish: Long, smooth, and lingering, with echoes of dark fruit, cocoa, and a touch of leather. The tannins are polished, leaving a silky yet structured impression. The wine’s balance of richness and freshness ensures it will continue to develop beautifully with further ageing.
Food Pairing: Slow-braised lamb shank enhances the wine’s deep fruit and spice notes, while its tannic structure pairs perfectly with the richness of the dish. Aged Parmesan cheese provides a savoury contrast to the wine’s plush texture and dark fruit complexity.
