Bouchard Finlayson, Missionvale Chardonnay 2023
Bouchard Finlayson, a boutique winery nestled in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, is celebrated for its exceptional cool-climate wines. The Missionvale Chardonnay 2023 stands as the estate’s flagship Chardonnay, paying homage to the mission hospital established on the property in the early 19th century. All grapes for this wine are estate-grown, ensuring a true reflection of the unique terroir.
The 2023 vintage experienced moderate and mild winter weather with average rainfall, continuing into spring and early summer. These conditions, ideal for slow and even ripening, were briefly interrupted in mid-December by refreshing showers. January saw dry and cool conditions, leading to earlier maturity of early-ripening cultivars. A significant 80mm downpour in the third week of February set the tone for the rest of the vintage, with a total of 240mm of rainfall by the end of harvest. Rigorous selection of only ripe and healthy bunches proved critical. Grape bunches were pressed whole, and the juice was racked to barrels following a short settling period, without enzyme addition. Fermentation commenced spontaneously with indigenous yeast populations. The wine matured sur lie in French oak for nine months, with 30% new barrels, and 11% of the final cuvée was fermented and matured in terracotta amphorae. Bottling occurred with light filtration in January 2024.
Appearance: The wine displays a pale straw colour with a subtle green hue, reflecting its youth and vitality. The bright, almost luminous clarity in the glass suggests meticulous winemaking practices. As the wine swirls, slow-forming legs cascade down the glass, hinting at its balanced structure and moderate alcohol content. A faint golden shimmer at the edges hints at the gentle oak ageing, indicating both freshness and depth.
Aroma: Initially reserved, the nose gradually unveils precise notes of lemon rind, grilled pineapple, and white flowers. As the wine opens, additional layers emerge, including hints of fresh brioche, toasted hazelnut, and a distinct oyster shell minerality that speaks to its cool-climate origins. Subtle nuances of peach skin and baked quince add further complexity, making the bouquet both intriguing and inviting.
Taste: The palate is linear yet textured, featuring flavours of ripe pear and macadamia nut, with an underlying tension that keeps the wine fresh and precise. A zesty citrus undertone, marked by Meyer lemon and grapefruit, provides vibrancy, while the creamy mouthfeel, derived from extended lees contact, adds depth without overwhelming the palate. The oak influence is finely integrated, offering delicate hints of vanilla pod and light spice, allowing the purity of fruit to remain at the forefront. A faint saline note adds further elegance, reinforcing the wine’s coastal influence.
Finish: The finish is graceful and finely balanced, with lingering notes of fig, quince, and lemon curd. A subtle savoury accent, reminiscent of crushed oyster shell and lightly toasted almonds, leaves a mouth-watering impression, inviting another sip. The interplay of acidity and creamy texture ensures a long, evolving finish that speaks to both finesse and ageing potential.
Food Pairing: The Missionvale Chardonnay 2023 pairs beautifully with creamy prawn stroganoff, where its texture complements the richness of the dish. A simple Waldorf salad is also an excellent match, as the wine’s acidity balances the sweetness of the apples and the creaminess of the dressing. For cheese lovers, grilled halloumi or chèvre enhances the wine’s subtle nutty notes. Roast chicken with tarragon or seared scallops with lemon butter also highlight its layered complexity, while fresh oysters bring out the mineral and saline elements for an elegant pairing.
The Bouchard Finlayson Missionvale Chardonnay 2023 exemplifies the harmonious interplay between meticulous viticulture and the distinctive cool-climate terroir of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, offering a refined and memorable tasting experience.
