Picardy Pinot Noir 2022
Picardy Wines, founded in 1993 by Bill, Sandra, and Dan Pannell, is a family-owned winery in Western Australia’s Pemberton region, renowned for its refined, Old World–inspired wines. Known for elegance and balance, Picardy Pinot Noir has become a benchmark for Australian cool-climate Pinot, reflecting meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and minimal-intervention winemaking. The 2022 vintage delivers purity, structure, and vibrant aromatics, showcasing the exceptional potential of Pemberton’s unique terroir.
The vineyard’s gravelly, loamy soils, combined with a cool maritime climate moderated by southern ocean breezes, provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, with traditional fermentation including partial whole-bunch inclusion to enhance perfume and fine tannin structure. The wine matures for around 10 months in French oak barriques (about 30% new), delivering subtle oak integration and complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
Appearance: Bright, medium ruby-red with garnet hues, showcasing clarity and youthful vibrancy. Moderate viscosity with fine, elegant legs on the glass.
Aroma: Aromatically expressive, with red cherries, wild strawberries, and cranberry at the forefront, layered with delicate rose petals, forest floor, and hints of savoury spice and subtle cedar.
Taste: Elegant and precise, offering a core of fresh red berries and pomegranate framed by subtle savoury notes of spice, dried herbs, and a gentle earthy minerality. Fine, silky tannins and bright acidity create a beautifully balanced, medium-bodied palate.
Finish: Long, refined, and graceful, lingering with red fruit purity, delicate spice, and a mineral-driven freshness.
Food Pairing: Superb with duck confit and cherry glaze, roast quail with wild mushroom risotto, or a creamy brie and charcuterie platter.
