Attems, Pinot Grigio Ramato (Orange wine) 2020
Attems is a historic winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region known for its exceptional Pinot Grigio and traditional ramato (copper-hued) wines. With a winemaking history dating back to 1106, the estate continues to honour local traditions while embracing modern techniques. The 2020 vintage benefited from a warm but balanced growing season, allowing the grapes to develop rich flavours while maintaining freshness and acidity.
Ramato wines are made using a short period of skin contact, which gives the wine its distinctive copper colour and enhances texture and complexity. Attems Pinot Grigio Ramato 2020 undergoes fermentation in stainless steel, followed by lees ageing to add depth and roundness while preserving its vibrant character.
Appearance: Deep copper with rose-gold reflections, shimmering with clarity. The wine’s unique hue is a result of extended skin contact, creating an elegant and visually striking presence in the glass. As it swirls, it reveals a slight viscosity, hinting at its textured mouthfeel.
Aroma: Expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe apricot, wild strawberries, and orange peel. Floral notes of rose petals and hibiscus add finesse, while subtle hints of dried herbs and crushed almonds bring complexity. As the wine opens, delicate spice and honeyed notes emerge, enhancing its depth and richness.
Taste: Medium-bodied and textured, with flavours of blood orange, pomegranate, and dried peach. The gentle tannins from skin contact give the wine a fine grip, while fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and balanced. A touch of ginger, white pepper, and a slight saline note add an extra layer of intrigue, making each sip dynamic and engaging.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering citrus, red fruit, and a subtle nutty bitterness. A delicate mineral streak enhances the wine’s structure, leaving a refined and refreshing impression. The combination of fruit, spice, and texture makes for a complex yet easy-drinking wine.
Food Pairing: A perfect match for grilled prawns with citrus and herbs, where the wine’s acidity complements the dish’s freshness. It also pairs beautifully with prosciutto and melon, balancing the sweet and savoury contrast. For a plant-based option, try it with roasted sweet potatoes and sage, where the wine’s texture enhances the dish’s natural sweetness and earthy tones.
