Primosic is a family-run winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, known for its dedication to traditional winemaking and the expression of native grape varieties. With a history dating back to the early 20th century, the estate is located in the Collio region, an area famous for its structured, mineral-driven wines. The 2020 vintage benefited from warm days and cool nights, allowing the Refosco grapes to ripen fully while maintaining their characteristic acidity and vibrant aromatics.

Refosco is one of Friuli’s most historic red grape varieties, prized for its deep colour, firm tannins, and distinctive dark fruit profile. Sourced from hillside vineyards with mineral-rich soils, Primosic’s Refosco undergoes fermentation in stainless steel before ageing in oak barrels, enhancing complexity while preserving the grape’s freshness and structure.

Appearance: Deep ruby with vibrant violet reflections, showcasing its youth and intensity. The wine is nearly opaque at its core, fading to a rich purple hue at the rim. When swirled in the glass, it reveals a slight viscosity, leaving slow-moving legs that hint at its structure and alcohol content.

Aroma: Bold and expressive, with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plums. Subtle notes of black pepper, liquorice, and cocoa emerge, complemented by earthy undertones and a hint of dried herbs. As the wine opens, a delicate balsamic note adds further depth.

Taste: Medium to full-bodied, with a vibrant and well-balanced profile. Dark fruit flavours dominate, supported by firm tannins that give the wine structure and ageing potential. A touch of spice, tobacco, and a fine mineral streak add complexity, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and food-friendly. The oak influence is subtle, contributing to a smooth yet bold texture.

Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice, and a gentle savoury note. A delicate hint of cocoa and black pepper leaves a refined and structured impression, making the wine both elegant and powerful.

Food Pairing: A perfect match for grilled lamb chops with rosemary, where the wine’s tannins complement the meat’s richness. It also pairs beautifully with aged Montasio cheese, enhancing its nutty and savoury qualities. For a plant-based option, try it with roasted aubergine and black olive tapenade, where the wine’s structure balances the dish’s depth of flavour.
