Rijk's 'Private Cellar' Pinotage 2020 is a bold and expressive Pinotage from Tulbagh, South Africa, crafted by Rijk’s Wine Estate, a producer renowned for its dedication to this uniquely South African varietal. Known for producing age-worthy and complex Pinotage wines, Rijk’s sources fruit from low-yielding, dryland vineyards, ensuring concentration and depth while maintaining elegance and balance.

The 2020 vintage benefited from warm, dry conditions that led to small, intensely flavoured berries, enhancing the wine’s richness and structure. Fermented in open-top fermenters and aged in French oak barrels, this wine showcases the power and finesse of premium South African Pinotage.

Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet edges, reflecting its concentration and ageing potential.

Aroma: The nose is rich and inviting, with aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plums, and mulberries, layered with notes of vanilla, mocha, and sweet spice from oak maturation. Subtle hints of cedar, leather, and earthy undertones add complexity.

Taste: Full-bodied and structured, the palate delivers intense dark fruit flavours, complemented by savoury notes of tobacco, dark chocolate, and dried herbs. The tannins are velvety yet firm, providing structure and excellent ageing potential. Well-integrated oak adds depth and a touch of spice.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering dark fruit, spice, and a fine mineral edge, leaving a polished and sophisticated impression.

Food Pairing: Rijk’s 'Private Cellar' Pinotage 2020 pairs beautifully with grilled venison loin with berry reduction, where its dark fruit and spice complement the dish’s gamey richness. It also pairs excellently with slow-braised lamb shank, enhancing the savoury depth of the dish. Decanting for one hour is recommended to fully express its complexity.
