Sanlorenzo is a small but highly respected estate located in Montalcino, Tuscany, known for producing exceptional Sangiovese wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Luciano Ciolfi, the owner and winemaker, is committed to traditional methods and sustainable viticulture, creating wines that beautifully express both the land and the vintage. The estate's limited production ensures a high level of care and precision in each bottle, and their Brunello di Montalcino is particularly well-regarded among critics and collectors. However, their Rosso di Montalcino offers a more approachable expression of the same Sangiovese grapes used for the Brunello, perfect for earlier drinking while still reflecting the same high standards.

The vineyards at Sanlorenzo are perched at an altitude of around 500 metres above sea level, which helps moderate the Tuscan heat and retain freshness in the grapes. The soil is a complex mix of clay, limestone, and marl, rich in minerals that contribute to the wine's structure and elegance. The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino was fermented in stainless steel to preserve the pure fruit character of the Sangiovese grapes, followed by ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, which adds subtle oak influence without overwhelming the wine's natural vibrancy.

Appearance: The wine displays a bright ruby red colour with slight purple tinges at the edges, reflecting its youth and freshness.

Aroma: On the nose, the wine bursts with fresh red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, alongside floral notes of violets and rose petals. There are also hints of earthy minerals, and a touch of warm spices like cinnamon and clove, adding complexity.

Taste: The palate is medium-bodied with lively acidity and refined tannins. The flavours of red cherry, strawberry, and cranberry are prominent, balanced by subtle earthy notes and a hint of fresh herbs like thyme. The wine is juicy and vibrant, with just enough structure to give it depth.

Finish: The finish is long and clean, with lingering red fruit notes and a slight herbal bitterness that adds complexity and balance.

Food Pairing: This wine pairs beautifully with Italian cuisine, particularly dishes that have earthy, rich flavours. One ideal pairing is tagliatelle with wild boar ragu, where the wine's acidity and fresh fruit cut through the richness of the meat, while the herbal notes complement the savoury depth of the dish. Another excellent match would be grilled lamb chops seasoned with rosemary and garlic. The wine's tannins soften with the texture of the lamb, while its bright cherry flavours provide a counterpoint to the robust, aromatic herbs in the dish.
