Oak Valley Estate, located in the cool-climate region of Elgin, South Africa, has built a reputation for producing elegant and expressive wines that reflect their unique terroir. Established in 1898, the estate was originally known for fruit farming before diversifying into high-quality viticulture. Elgin’s cool temperatures, high-altitude vineyards, and ancient Bokkeveld shale soils create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing for slow ripening, fine tannin development, and vibrant acidity. The Sounds of Silence Pinot Noir 2023 is a pure and delicate expression of the grape, showcasing finesse, bright fruit, and subtle earthy complexity.

The grapes for the Sounds of Silence Pinot Noir 2023 are hand-harvested from selected vineyard blocks at higher elevations, where the cooler conditions preserve aromatic freshness. A combination of whole-berry and whole-cluster fermentation is used to enhance structure and complexity, followed by gentle extraction to retain the wine’s silky texture. The wine is aged in a mix of older French oak barrels for 9–10 months, allowing it to develop depth without overwhelming the delicate fruit.

Appearance: Light ruby with a translucent core, showing classic Pinot Noir elegance. The colour is bright and youthful, with a subtle garnet hue at the rim, suggesting purity and freshness. As the wine swirls, delicate, slow-moving legs indicate a balanced texture with refined tannins and moderate alcohol. The clarity and vibrancy of the wine hint at its precision and minimal intervention in the winemaking process.

Aroma: Vibrant and perfumed, with aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries, and pomegranate. Subtle floral notes of rose petal and dried lavender add elegance, while underlying hints of earthy forest floor, clove, and a whisper of oak spice bring depth. A touch of crushed granite minerality lingers in the background, reflecting Elgin’s cool-climate terroir.

Taste: Silky and light on the palate, yet with impressive depth and energy. Juicy red berry flavours of cranberry, raspberry, and sour cherry lead, supported by soft, fine tannins. A savoury edge emerges with notes of dried herbs, black tea, and a hint of mushroom, adding complexity to the fruit-driven profile. The well-integrated oak provides subtle spice, enhancing the wine’s elegant texture without dominating the purity of the fruit.

Finish: Long and fresh, with lingering red fruit, delicate spice, and a touch of minerality. The fine acidity keeps the wine lifted and precise, ensuring a refreshing, mouthwatering conclusion that invites another sip. A final whisper of dried roses and subtle earthiness lingers, reinforcing the wine’s elegance and ageing potential.

Food Pairing:
Pan-seared duck breast with cherry and thyme jus, where the wine’s bright acidity and red fruit complement the rich gamey flavours.
Wild mushroom and truffle tart, as the earthy complexity of the wine enhances the umami depth of the dish.
