Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is a distinguished white wine from the Cape Town region in South Africa, produced by the esteemed Spier Wine Farm. Established in 1692, Spier is one of South Africa's oldest wine estates, renowned for its commitment to quality and sustainability. The 21 Gables range pays homage to the farm's architectural heritage, boasting 21 Cape Dutch gables—the most on any wine farm in the country.
The 2023 vintage is crafted from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes sourced from vineyards located less than 10 miles from the sea, benefiting from the cooling maritime influence. The grapes were harvested at different ripeness levels from two vineyards planted on the slopes of the Tygerberg Hills, resulting in a concentrated mid-palate with impressive viscosity and freshness. The wine was fermented under controlled temperatures between 11° and 13°C and matured for four months on the lees before bottling.
Appearance: Pale lemon-green with a brilliant, almost crystalline clarity. The wine’s brightness reflects its youthful vibrancy, with light golden hues suggesting depth and concentration.
Aroma: Expressive and layered, featuring ripe tropical fruits like mango and melon, balanced by crisp citrus notes of lime and grapefruit. Subtle hints of freshly cut grass, crushed herbs, and elderflower add complexity, with a gentle saline edge reminiscent of its coastal influence.
Taste: Fresh and vibrant, with a lively acidity that carries flavours of passionfruit, guava, and juicy green apple. A herbaceous streak of lemongrass and capsicum runs through the palate, adding structure and balance. The lees contact imparts a subtle creaminess, rounding out the mid-palate and creating a textured, elegant mouthfeel.
Finish: Long and refreshing, with a zesty minerality and lingering notes of lime zest, gooseberry, and a whisper of sea breeze salinity. The crisp acidity ensures a clean, precise finish, leaving a bright and lasting impression.
Food Pairing: This Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with lemon butter-fried scallops, where its acidity cuts through the richness while enhancing the delicate seafood flavours. It also complements ceviche, highlighting its citrus-driven freshness. A fantastic match for leek and white mushroom soup with a dollop of Gorgonzola cheese, as the wine’s herbal and tropical notes contrast beautifully with the creamy, umami-rich profile of the dish. Best enjoyed well-chilled to enhance its crisp, refreshing character.
