Vergelegen, one of South Africa's most prestigious estates, is renowned for producing exceptional wines that reflect the quality and diversity of the Stellenbosch terroir. Founded in 1700, the estate has a rich history and a reputation for innovation and meticulous winemaking. The Vergelegen Merlot 2019 is a testament to the estate’s expertise, showcasing a finely balanced and elegant expression of this classic Bordeaux varietal.

The vineyards are planted on decomposed granite soils with excellent drainage, located on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains. The 2019 vintage experienced a relatively cool growing season, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in a wine of depth, vibrancy, and refined tannins. French oak maturation enhances its complexity and structure without overshadowing the fruit.

Appearance: Deep ruby with a garnet rim, exuding richness and intensity.

Aroma: The nose is inviting and complex, featuring ripe black cherries, plums, and cassis, with hints of dried herbs, cedarwood, and a touch of dark chocolate. Subtle notes of tobacco leaf and vanilla from oak aging add depth and sophistication.

Taste: Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals a harmonious interplay of dark fruit flavours like blackcurrant and mulberry, complemented by savoury notes of roasted herbs and a hint of graphite. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and elegance, while a well-integrated acidity ensures freshness and balance. Oak influences are subtle, imparting nuances of spice and mocha without dominating.

Finish: The finish is long and polished, with lingering notes of dark fruit, a touch of earthy minerality, and a refined oak character that leaves a velvety impression.

Food Pairing: Vergelegen Merlot 2019 pairs wonderfully with rosemary-crusted lamb chops, as the wine’s savoury and herbal notes enhance the lamb’s flavours. It is also an excellent match for beef bourguignon, where its dark fruit and earthy elements harmonise with the richness of the dish.
