Los Cerros de San Juan is one of the oldest wineries in Uruguay, established in 1854, and located in the Colonia region along the banks of the Río de la Plata. Known for their pioneering spirit, the estate has gained a reputation for producing wines that uniquely express the Uruguayan terroir. Their 2023 Riesling-Viognier blend reflects their commitment to crafting expressive and distinctive wines from less commonly blended varietals. This wine combines the zesty brightness of Riesling with the aromatic richness of Viognier, offering a fresh and intriguing white blend that showcases the cool maritime influence of Colonia.

The region's terroir is characterised by clay and limestone soils, which contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality. Colonia enjoys a temperate climate, with cool breezes from the nearby Río de la Plata moderating the summer heat, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining fresh acidity. The careful balance of Riesling's acidity and Viognier's floral notes results in a wine that’s both aromatic and refreshing.

Appearance: Pale yellow with a slight golden shimmer, clear and bright in the glass.

Aroma: A beautiful blend of white flowers, citrus fruits, and stone fruits. The Riesling brings zesty lime and lemon notes, while the Viognier adds aromas of peach, apricot, and delicate honeysuckle.

Taste: On the palate, it’s crisp and refreshing, with vibrant citrus flavours from the Riesling, balanced by the ripe peach and apricot notes of Viognier. The wine has a light to medium body, with a well-integrated acidity that adds liveliness and balance.

Finish: The finish is clean and smooth, with lingering citrus zest and a subtle floral hint that leaves a refreshing impression.

Food Pairing: This wine pairs wonderfully with seafood dishes, especially fresh oysters or grilled shrimp, where its acidity enhances the briny flavours of the shellfish. It also complements spicy Asian dishes, such as Thai green curry, with its balance of freshness and aromatic complexity, cutting through the spice while complementing the fragrant flavours of the dish.
