Joshua Cooper, Claret 2024
Joshua Cooper, a prominent figure in the Australian wine scene, established his own label in 2012, building on his upbringing at the Cobaw Ridge winery, founded by his parents, Alan and Nelly Cooper. His wines have consistently garnered critical acclaim, with all six submissions to the Halliday Wine Companion receiving scores of 95 or above, leading to Joshua Cooper Wines being honoured as the Best New Winery in 2024.
The 2024 Chardonnay is sourced entirely from the Dash Farm vineyard, situated on the weathered granite slopes of Mount Alexander. This high-altitude site, perched at over 450 metres above sea level, benefits from lean granite soils that confer both concentration and freshness at low sugar levels. The vineyard's unique terroir contributes to the wine's distinctive character.
Appearance: Pale straw with a vibrant green tinge, reflecting its youth and cool-climate origins. The wine is bright and crystal clear, with a delicate sheen that hints at its fine structure. Swirling the glass reveals a light yet persistent viscosity, suggesting both freshness and depth, with slow-moving tears forming on the glass.
Aroma: A beautifully lifted nose of citrus blossom, fresh lemon zest, and white peach, layered with crushed stone and subtle cashew notes from gentle oak influence. As the wine opens up, hints of flint and wet slate emerge, adding complexity and depth.
Taste: Pure and precise, showcasing a core of zesty lemon, grapefruit, and underripe nectarine. A finely tuned balance of acidity and texture creates a wine that is both refreshing and complex. Subtle notes of almond skin and lightly toasted oak bring a delicate creaminess, without overpowering the wine’s natural vibrancy.
Finish: The acidity carries through to a long, mouthwatering finish, leaving lingering citrus and mineral notes. A chalky, almost saline texture builds on the palate, enhancing the wine’s structure and giving it a savoury edge. As the wine fades, whispers of white florals and a touch of hazelnut emerge, adding layers of elegance and finesse.
Food Pairing: This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, such as prawns or scallops, where the wine’s acidity complements the natural sweetness of the shellfish. It also works well with creamy pasta dishes like fettuccine alfredo, where its bright citrus character cuts through the richness, creating a perfect balance.
