Mac Forbes Hugh Cabernets 2022
Mac Forbes is a small, family-run winery in Victoria, Australia, celebrated for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines that highlight the character of cool-climate vineyards. The Hugh Cabernets 2022 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from selected sites, chosen to showcase the elegance, depth, and ageing potential typical of Forbes’ top-tier wines. The 2022 vintage benefited from a temperate growing season, allowing fruit to develop concentration while retaining bright natural acidity.
The vineyards are planted on well-drained soils with gravelly loam and clay components, promoting deep root systems and balanced ripening. Grapes were hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented in small open vats, with gentle extraction to maintain finesse. The wine was aged in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels, integrating subtle oak spice without overpowering the fruit.
Appearance Deep ruby with violet hues at the rim. The wine’s clarity and density suggest excellent concentration, and its slow-moving legs indicate a full-bodied structure with strong ageing potential.
Aroma Pronounced aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum, and blackberry are layered with hints of graphite, dried herbs, and cedar. Subtle notes of dark chocolate and tobacco emerge with aeration, enhancing complexity.
Taste The palate is structured and elegant, featuring layers of concentrated dark fruits, fine-grained tannins, and mineral undertones. Savoury hints of spice and cedar complement the rich fruit, while the acidity provides balance and lift throughout.
Finish Long and refined, with lingering notes of dark berries, graphite, and subtle mocha. The tannins are polished yet firm, offering excellent ageing potential.
Food Pairing Grilled venison with juniper berries complements the wine’s dark fruit and structured tannins. Slow-roasted beef with herb crust enhances its savoury complexity and depth.
