Domaine Matassa, founded in 2003 by New Zealand-born winemaker Tom Lubbe, is situated in the Roussillon region of southern France. The estate is renowned for its commitment to biodynamic and low-intervention winemaking practices, focusing on indigenous grape varieties to produce authentic and expressive wines. The 2023 Olla Rouge is a testament to this philosophy, blending Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Macabeu from old vines cultivated on clay and limestone soils.

Appearance: The wine exhibits a light ruby hue with a slight translucency, indicative of its minimal intervention approach. Its clarity is excellent, and upon swirling, it reveals a medium viscosity with well-defined legs, suggesting a balanced alcohol content. The light interacts gracefully with its surface, highlighting its youthful vibrancy.

Aroma: On the nose, the Olla Rouge 2023 offers an inviting bouquet of fresh red fruits, including strawberries and cherries, complemented by subtle floral notes of violets. There are underlying hints of Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary, alongside a touch of vanilla and black tea, adding complexity to the aromatic profile.

Taste: The palate is light and refreshing, with a pronounced acidity that enhances its drinkability. Flavours of juicy red berries are at the forefront, accompanied by nuances of herbal undertones and a delicate spiciness. The wine's low tannin structure and moderate alcohol content contribute to its smooth and approachable character.

Finish: The finish is light yet persistent, with a lingering freshness that highlights its natural vibrancy. Red berry notes slowly fade into delicate herbal and earthy undertones, offering a subtle complexity. A touch of minerality emerges towards the end, reinforcing the wine’s sense of place. The acidity keeps the finish crisp and mouth-watering, leaving a refreshing impression that invites another sip

Food Pairing: This versatile wine pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes. It complements grilled vegetables, light pasta dishes, and charcuterie boards. Its freshness and acidity also make it an excellent match for pizza, as well as Mediterranean-inspired cuisine featuring tomatoes, olives, and herbs
