Raphael Chopin is a rising star in Beaujolais, crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines with a focus on minimal intervention and sustainable viticulture. His Les Charmes 2022 is a pure expression of Gamay from the Beaujolais-Villages appellation, made from old vines planted on granitic soils. The 2022 vintage benefited from a warm growing season, with cool nights preserving freshness and balance, resulting in a wine that is both vibrant and structured.

Sourced from vineyards in the northern part of Beaujolais, Les Charmes is made using semi-carbonic maceration, a traditional technique that enhances fruit purity while maintaining fine tannins and a supple mouthfeel. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in neutral vessels, this wine retains its bright, fresh character while showcasing the depth and complexity of the vintage.

Appearance Medium ruby with a luminous clarity and subtle violet hues. The wine’s brightness and light extraction highlight its delicate structure and youthful vibrancy.

Aroma Expressive and inviting, with aromas of fresh red cherries, wild raspberries, and crushed strawberries. Floral notes of peony and violet mingle with hints of crushed granite, white pepper, and a touch of earthiness, adding complexity and depth.

Taste Juicy and energetic, with vibrant acidity carrying flavours of tart cranberry, red currant, and ripe pomegranate. A fine mineral streak and subtle spice add dimension, while silky tannins provide gentle structure without overpowering the fruit-forward nature of the wine. The mid-palate offers a delicate balance between freshness and depth, making it both lively and refined.

Finish Long and precise, with lingering notes of bright red fruit, floral undertones, and a subtle mineral lift. The wine’s elegant acidity ensures a clean, refreshing close, making it an excellent choice for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.

Food Pairing Roast duck with cherry glaze enhances the wine’s bright fruit and supple tannins. A classic charcuterie board with cured meats and aged cheeses complements its savoury complexity and mineral-driven finish.
