Telegramme Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2021
Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2021 is the second wine of the renowned Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe, a historic producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône. Crafted by the Brunier family, who have been making wine in the region since 1891, Télégramme offers a more accessible and fruit-forward expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape while maintaining the estate’s signature depth and finesse. Made primarily from Grenache, with smaller amounts of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, this wine showcases the elegance and balance of the appellation’s distinctive terroir.
The 2021 vintage was cooler than usual, resulting in wines with freshness, bright acidity, and a refined structure. The grapes come from the younger vines of La Crau, one of the region’s most famous vineyard sites, known for its stony galets roulés soils that retain heat and enhance complexity. Fermentation in concrete and ageing in large old foudres allow the purity of the fruit to shine while adding subtle texture.
Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet highlights, showing both youthful vibrancy and aging potential.
Aroma: The nose is expressive and perfumed, offering notes of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and plums, layered with hints of dried herbs, lavender, and garrigue. Subtle notes of spice, leather, and crushed stones add complexity.
Taste: Medium to full-bodied, the palate is fresh and refined, with juicy red fruit flavours of strawberry, redcurrant, and blackberry, balanced by savoury elements of black pepper, thyme, and earth. Silky tannins provide a smooth yet structured mouthfeel, while a lively acidity keeps the wine vibrant and balanced. The oak influence is subtle, allowing the fruit and terroir to take centre stage.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering notes of ripe red fruit, dried herbs, and a touch of minerality, leaving a polished and harmonious impression.
Food Pairing: Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2021 pairs beautifully with roast duck with cherry sauce, where its acidity and fruit complement the dish’s richness. It also works well with herb-crusted lamb chops, as the wine’s earthy and herbal notes enhance the dish’s Mediterranean flavours. Best enjoyed with a short decant to fully reveal its complexity.
