The Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Ornellaia 2011 is a legendary wine from one of Italy’s most esteemed estates, located in Bolgheri, Tuscany. Known for producing iconic Super Tuscans, Ornellaia represents the pinnacle of winemaking in the region, blending international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The 2011 vintage, bottled in a 1.5L magnum, showcases the power, elegance, and longevity that have made Ornellaia a benchmark for Bordeaux-style blends in Tuscany.

The 2011 vintage was characterized by a warm growing season, which contributed to the wine’s rich, ripe fruit and velvety texture. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak, adding layers of complexity and structure, followed by further ageing in bottle. Ornellaia is a wine that can age for decades, with magnums offering even greater potential for long-term development.

Appearance: Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, showing its concentration and beginning of maturation.

Aroma: The nose is intense and complex, with aromas of blackcurrants, ripe plums, and blackberries, intertwined with notes of tobacco, cedar, and dark chocolate. As the wine opens, layers of Mediterranean herbs, graphite, and sweet spices like cinnamon and clove emerge, adding depth and elegance.

Taste: Full-bodied with velvety tannins and a beautifully balanced structure. The palate reveals rich flavours of black cherry, cassis, and plum, complemented by earthy undertones of leather, tobacco, and truffle. The oak ageing imparts subtle hints of vanilla, mocha, and a touch of smoke, enhancing the wine’s complexity without overpowering the fruit. The wine’s acidity keeps the ripe fruit in check, ensuring freshness and vibrancy despite its power.

Finish: Exceptionally long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spices, and a touch of savoury earthiness. The fine, polished tannins and vibrant acidity suggest that this wine will continue to evolve beautifully in the magnum format.

Food Pairing: This iconic Super Tuscan pairs perfectly with rich, flavourful dishes such as grilled steak or lamb chops, where the wine’s tannins and dark fruit complement the char and savoury flavours of the meat. It also pairs well with slow-cooked dishes like beef stew or braised short ribs, where the wine’s depth and complexity can enhance the richness of the dish. Aged hard cheeses, such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino, are also ideal pairings, as they bring out the wine’s subtle earthy and nutty undertones.
