McHenry Hohnen Wines, based in Margaret River, Western Australia, is celebrated for producing expressive, site-driven wines that combine precision with a sense of place. Founded by viticulturist David Hohnen and his nephews, the winery is a champion of sustainable and biodynamic practices, crafting wines of balance, purity, and elegance. The GSM 2021 is a refined expression of the classic Rhône blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (Mourvèdre), showcasing the vibrancy and structural finesse of Margaret River fruit with a contemporary, lifted style.

The fruit is sourced from estate vineyards in Margaret River’s southern sub-regions, where gravelly loam soils over clay and the maritime climate create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Each variety is hand-picked and fermented separately with indigenous yeasts, with a portion of whole-bunch Grenache for aromatic lift and texture. The wine matures in seasoned French oak, preserving the purity of fruit and enhancing the blend’s layered complexity.

Appearance: Deep ruby-red with youthful purple hues, bright and clear in the glass. Medium-bodied with elegant, slow-forming tears.

Aroma: Perfumed and complex, offering notes of red and black cherries, ripe raspberry, and plum, intertwined with subtle spice, wild herbs, and a gentle savoury earthiness. Hints of white pepper and dried rose petals add aromatic lift.

Taste: Juicy and vibrant, with a core of red berry fruits supported by darker plum and blackberry. Fine-grained tannins and lively acidity create balance, while subtle spice and savoury mineral undertones add depth and finesse.

Finish: Long, polished, and fresh, with lingering red fruit brightness, subtle spice, and a savoury, textural edge that invites another sip.
