Fanti Brunello di Montalcino 2020
Fanti is a prestigious estate in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany, with a history that stretches back to the 19th century. Known for its careful blending of tradition with modern winemaking techniques, Fanti has built a reputation for producing elegant and expressive Brunello di Montalcino. The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, sourced from vineyards that benefit from ideal growing conditions in the rolling hills of Montalcino. This vintage, although young for Brunello, already shows the rich potential of the grape in the hands of the Fanti family.
The vineyards are planted in sandy clay soils with limestone, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s structure and minerality. Montalcino’s warm days and cool nights allow for a slow, even ripening, which preserves acidity while enhancing the complexity of flavours. Fanti ages its Brunello for at least two years in large oak casks, ensuring a harmonious balance between fruit, tannins, and subtle oak influence.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with garnet highlights, clear and intense in the glass.
Aroma: The nose is rich and layered, with notes of ripe red cherries, wild berries, and plums, accompanied by hints of violets and roses. There are also undertones of leather, tobacco, and earthy spices, such as clove and anise, with a touch of vanilla from oak aging.
Taste: Full-bodied and well-structured, with firm yet velvety tannins. The palate reflects the ripe red fruit aromas, featuring flavours of cherry, raspberry, and plum, along with savoury notes of leather, dried herbs, and a hint of balsamic. The acidity is bright, keeping the wine lively and balanced, while the oak influence adds depth without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice, and a touch of minerality, leaving a refined and harmonious aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This Brunello pairs perfectly with hearty Tuscan dishes such as wild boar ragu, where the wine’s tannins and acidity balance the richness of the sauce while complementing the gamey flavours. It also shines alongside grilled bistecca alla Fiorentina, with the wine’s structure and complexity standing up to the bold, charred flavours of the steak.
