Bodega Contador, Contador 2016 (Tempranillo)
Bodega Contador, founded by the acclaimed winemaker Benjamin Romeo, is one of Rioja’s most prestigious wineries, producing wines that have gained worldwide recognition for their depth, elegance, and complexity. Contador 2016 is the estate’s flagship wine, a pure Tempranillo that reflects the meticulous vineyard selection and precision winemaking that define Romeo’s style. This vintage showcases exceptional balance, structure, and ageing potential, making it a benchmark expression of Rioja.
The grapes come from old vines planted in high-altitude vineyards, where cool nights help preserve acidity while warm days ensure optimal ripening. The soils, a mix of limestone, clay, and sand, contribute to the wine’s minerality and structure. Following careful hand-harvesting and selection, the wine undergoes extended maceration for deep colour and tannin extraction, followed by ageing in 100% new French oak barrels, enhancing its richness and complexity.
Appearance Deep ruby with an opaque core and garnet reflections at the rim, showing both intensity and subtle evolution. The wine’s viscosity creates slow, graceful legs in the glass, hinting at its concentration and ageing potential.
Aroma Intensely aromatic and layered, with ripe black cherry, blackberry, and cassis leading the way. Subtle notes of cedar, tobacco, and cocoa emerge from the oak, while hints of liquorice, dried herbs, and graphite add complexity. As the wine opens, delicate floral touches of violets and a balsamic undertone create an elegant and refined bouquet.
Taste Full-bodied and structured, with powerful yet finely polished tannins that frame the deep core of dark fruit. Flavours of black plum, blueberry, and fig dominate, balanced by layers of dark chocolate, espresso, and warm baking spices. The mid-palate introduces a savoury earthiness, with notes of black pepper, leather, and crushed stone enhancing its depth. The acidity remains fresh, providing vibrancy and ensuring the wine’s long-term ageing potential.
Finish Exceptionally long and complex, with lingering notes of ripe dark fruit, spice, and a touch of smoky oak. The tannins are refined yet firm, offering a seamless texture and structure. As the wine evolves in the glass, hints of mocha, truffle, and dried fruit emerge, leaving a sophisticated and lasting impression.
Food Pairing Slow-roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic enhances the wine’s rich tannins and deep savoury elements, creating a perfectly balanced pairing. Aged Manchego cheese with quince paste highlights the wine’s fruit and spice, offering a combination of intensity and refinement.
