Bodega Contador, Predicador Tinto 2021 (90% Tempranillo 5% Garnacha, 5% Graciano)
Bodega Contador, founded by esteemed winemaker Benjamin Romeo, is one of Rioja’s most renowned estates, known for producing wines that balance tradition with modern expression. Predicador Tinto 2021 is a vibrant and structured red that reflects Romeo’s meticulous vineyard selection and winemaking precision. Crafted primarily from Tempranillo, with small additions of Garnacha and Graciano, this wine delivers freshness, depth, and excellent ageing potential while remaining approachable in its youth.
The grapes are sourced from high-altitude vineyards with limestone, clay, and sandy soils, which contribute to the wine’s elegance and minerality. Cool nights and long growing seasons help preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels to add layers of texture and subtle spice without overwhelming the bright fruit character.
Appearance Deep ruby with a vibrant purple rim, displaying excellent clarity and richness. The wine’s youthful colour hints at its freshness and concentration, while its slow-moving legs suggest a well-balanced structure with refined tannins.
Aroma Expressive and layered, with ripe black cherry, redcurrant, and blackberry at the forefront. Subtle notes of liquorice, graphite, and dried herbs add depth, while delicate hints of vanilla, clove, and cocoa from oak ageing bring warmth and complexity. Floral touches of violets and a slight earthy undertone emerge as the wine opens, enhancing its aromatic profile.
Taste Medium to full-bodied, with a fresh yet structured profile. Juicy red and black fruits dominate, with flavours of blackcurrant, red cherry, and blueberry unfolding across the palate. The mid-palate introduces notes of dark chocolate, tobacco, and black pepper, adding savoury depth. The Garnacha contributes silkiness and bright fruit, while the Graciano enhances acidity and length, making the wine both lively and well-balanced.
Finish Long and refined, with lingering notes of red and black fruit, gentle spice, and a touch of minerality. The tannins are polished yet present, providing structure without overpowering the wine’s elegant fruit-driven profile. A final whisper of cocoa and dried herbs adds complexity to the lingering, sophisticated finish.
Food Pairing Grilled lamb cutlets with rosemary and sea salt enhance the wine’s savoury spice and tannic structure, creating a balanced pairing. Aged Manchego with fig preserves highlights the wine’s fruit and acidity, offering a refined yet approachable combination.
