Juillet Lallement, Brut Rosé Grand Cru NV
Juillet-Lallement is a small, family-run Champagne house in Verzy, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims known for producing structured and expressive wines. With a deep respect for traditional winemaking, the domaine focuses on showcasing the purity of its terroir, using meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar. Their Brut Rosé Grand Cru is a stunning expression of Pinot Noir, crafted using a combination of saignée and blending techniques to achieve both depth and elegance. This Champagne highlights the intensity and finesse of Grand Cru fruit while maintaining freshness and vibrancy.
The Grand Cru vineyards of Verzy are dominated by chalk-rich soils, which enhance the minerality and precision of the wine. The cooler climate of this area ensures that the fruit retains its natural acidity, balancing the richness and structure of the Pinot Noir. Extended lees ageing adds complexity, while the low dosage allows the pure fruit character to shine through.
Appearance: A brilliant, pale salmon-pink with fine, persistent bubbles. The colour is delicate yet vibrant, with hints of copper reflecting the Pinot Noir influence. The mousse is lively and refined, creating a sense of elegance in the glass.
Aroma: Fresh and expressive, with aromas of wild strawberries, redcurrants, and pomegranate. Floral notes of rose petals and orange blossom add lift, while underlying hints of brioche, crushed chalk, and a touch of white pepper provide depth. As the wine opens, subtle notes of raspberry coulis and blood orange emerge.
Taste: Lively and structured, with a beautiful balance between red berry fruit, crisp acidity, and fine minerality. The palate bursts with flavours of ripe cranberry, red cherry, and a touch of mandarin zest. A creamy texture from extended lees ageing adds depth, while a gentle spice note lingers in the background. The precision and tension in this wine make it both refreshing and complex.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering notes of wild berries, citrus zest, and a delicate chalky minerality. A touch of saline complexity enhances the freshness, leaving a refined and mouthwatering impression.
Food Pairing: Perfect with tuna tartare, where the wine’s acidity and red fruit notes enhance the dish’s delicate umami flavours. Also excellent with duck breast and raspberry sauce, complementing both the savoury richness and the bright fruit elements. Aged goat cheese would be an intriguing match, bringing out the Champagne’s minerality and subtle spice.
