Spier Signature Pinotage 2022
Spier is one of South Africa’s most historic wine farms, dating back to 1692, and has become well known for both its heritage and its modern, sustainable approach to winemaking. The Signature range is designed to offer bright, fruit-forward wines that reflect the country’s signature grapes and approachable style. Pinotage, a uniquely South African crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known locally as Hermitage), holds a special place in this collection, giving a smooth yet distinctly characterful red.
The vines are planted in decomposed granite and shale soils in Stellenbosch, benefiting from warm days tempered by cooling breezes from False Bay. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to retain vibrancy, with a portion aged in oak to lend roundness and spice. This results in a supple, modern expression of Pinotage, free from the overly rustic character sometimes associated with the variety.
Appearance: Deep ruby with purple hues at the rim, bright and youthful in the glass.
Aroma: Juicy notes of black plum, red cherry, and mulberry, supported by hints of mocha, sweet spice, and a touch of smokiness.
Taste: Medium-bodied and smooth, with ripe berry fruit at the core. Subtle layers of chocolate, liquorice, and gentle oak spice add complexity. The tannins are soft and approachable, balanced by fresh acidity.
Finish: Rounded and easy-drinking, with lingering flavours of dark fruit and a touch of cocoa.
Food Pairing: Great with South African braai meats such as boerewors or peri-peri chicken, or with a lentil and aubergine moussaka.
