Spikey Bridge Chardonnay 2024
Spikey Bridge, a boutique label from Tasmania, has become known for producing elegant, cool-climate wines that reflect the pristine maritime terroir of the island’s southern vineyards. Their Chardonnay 2024 is a striking expression of Tasmanian finesse, balancing purity, texture, and complexity with the vibrant acidity that defines the region. Crafted in small batches, it reflects modern precision winemaking while maintaining a sense of place, making it an exciting addition to the new generation of premium Tasmanian Chardonnay.
Fruit for the 2024 Chardonnay is sourced from select vineyards in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley and Derwent Valley, where cool nights and long, even ripening seasons enhance intensity and natural acidity. The grapes are hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, and fermented with wild yeasts, followed by partial maturation in French oak barrels (around 20% new oak). Time on lees with gentle stirring builds texture and layers of complexity while preserving vibrant fruit purity.
Appearance: Bright pale straw with green tinges, clear and luminous, with fine, elegant legs coating the glass.
Aroma: Fresh and expressive, with aromas of white peach, nectarine, and crisp green apple, lifted by notes of citrus zest, almond meal, and delicate flinty minerality. Subtle hints of brioche and struck match add aromatic intrigue.
Taste: Vibrant and precise, showing stone fruits, lemon curd, and grapefruit pith, layered with subtle nutty complexity from oak and lees ageing. The taut acidity and chalky minerality provide structure and energy, giving the palate both freshness and depth.
Finish: Long, elegant, and finely balanced, lingering with citrus zest, white peach, and a delicate saline edge that speaks to its maritime origins.
Food Pairing: Perfect with pan-seared Tasmanian scallops, roast chicken with lemon and thyme, or a creamy seafood pasta with fresh herbs.
