Fattoria di Basciano, a historic estate in the heart of the Chianti Rufina region of Tuscany, has been producing wines since the early 1900s. The Rufina subregion is known for producing some of the most refined and long-lived Chianti wines, thanks to its higher altitude and cooler climate. The 2020 Chianti Rufina from Fattoria di Basciano is a classic expression of Sangiovese, with the addition of small amounts of local varieties like Canaiolo and Colorino. This estate focuses on traditional winemaking techniques combined with modern precision, resulting in wines that reflect the elegance and complexity of the terroir.

The vineyards are located at altitudes between 300 and 400 metres above sea level, benefiting from the cooler temperatures and well-draining limestone soils. This unique environment allows for slower ripening, leading to wines with bright acidity, fine tannins, and concentrated fruit flavours. The 2020 vintage showcases the purity and vibrancy of the Sangiovese grape in this distinctive area of Tuscany.

Appearance: Bright ruby red with a slight garnet rim, clear and medium-bodied in the glass.

Aroma: The nose opens with classic Chianti aromas of ripe red cherries and raspberries, mingling with notes of violets and subtle hints of dried herbs, leather, and a touch of earthy spices.

Taste: Medium-bodied with fresh acidity, the palate delivers flavours of tart cherry, red plum, and cranberry, supported by savoury notes of leather, tobacco, and a touch of spice. The tannins are firm yet smooth, providing structure and balance to the bright fruit character.

Finish: The finish is long and elegant, with lingering red fruit, a touch of dried herbs, and a pleasant earthy minerality.

Food Pairing: This Chianti Rufina pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragu, where the wine’s acidity and tannins complement the rich meat sauce while enhancing the savoury flavours. It also shines with grilled lamb or roasted meats, where the earthy notes of the wine harmonise with the smoky, robust flavours of the dish.
