Cavalier Bartolomeo, a boutique winery in Piedmont, Italy, is celebrated for crafting traditional Barolos that capture the essence of the region's unique terroir. The San Lorenzo Barolo 2011 is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the prestigious San Lorenzo vineyard, located in the heart of Barolo. The 2011 vintage was warmer than usual, which has resulted in a more fruit-forward and approachable Barolo while retaining the structured tannins and complexity typical of Nebbiolo. This wine beautifully balances richness, elegance, and age-worthiness.

The San Lorenzo vineyard benefits from its south-facing position and calcareous clay soils, which enhance Nebbiolo’s natural acidity and structure. Aged in large Slavonian oak barrels, the wine expresses the vineyard’s unique character while developing layers of complexity through its extended maturation.

Appearance: Deep garnet with classic orange-tinged edges, signalling its maturity and the ageing potential of a well-made Barolo.

Aroma: Aromas of dried red cherries, rose petals, and violets dominate, with secondary notes of leather, tobacco, and truffle adding depth. As it breathes, layers of liquorice, earthy forest floor, and a touch of tar emerge, showcasing the hallmark complexity of Nebbiolo. Delicate hints of cedar and spice from the oak provide further richness to the bouquet.

Taste: Full-bodied and complex, the palate bursts with flavours of dried red fruits, cranberry, and plum balanced by earthy undertones of dried herbs, leather, and tobacco. The tannins, though firm, are finely integrated and softened by time, while Nebbiolo’s natural acidity provides a lively freshness. There are subtle notes of anise, black tea, and truffle that add to the wine’s savoury, layered profile.

Finish: Long and graceful, with persistent red fruit, earthy minerality, and a lingering hint of spice. The finish is refined and balanced, with the tannins softening to leave a silky, savoury aftertaste.

Pairings: Slow-cooked porchetta wrapped in jamón with cavolo nero, parsley, garlic, onion jam, and red wine jus. The wine’s tannins and acidity will cut through the richness of the porchetta, while its earthy complexity will mirror the herb-infused flavours of the dish.

Spiced lamb ribs with burnt maple, parsley, and hazelnut crumb. The savoury lamb and sweet burnt maple glaze will complement the Barolo’s dark fruit and spicy notes, while its structure and acidity balance the richness of the meat.

Cavalier Bartolomeo San Lorenzo Barolo 2011 is a beautifully mature Barolo, perfect for enjoying now but capable of further ageing for another 5–10 years. Its rich, layered complexity and balance make it an excellent match for bold, hearty dishes, providing an elegant and memorable drinking experience.
