Bodega Contador 'Predicador' Tinto 2020
Bodega Contador, founded by the iconic winemaker Benjamín Romeo, is known for producing some of the finest wines in Rioja. ‘Predicador’ Tinto is one of the estate's more accessible yet beautifully crafted wines, a younger sibling to the legendary "Contador" but made with the same meticulous care. Named after Clint Eastwood’s character in Pale Rider, this wine reflects power and precision. The 2020 vintage benefited from a relatively cool growing season, giving the wine balance and freshness alongside its concentrated fruit.
Romeo’s vineyards are located in the cooler, higher-altitude areas of Rioja, where he employs sustainable farming practices to enhance the expression of the terroir. The wine is primarily made from Tempranillo, with smaller percentages of Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo, aged in French oak for 12 months. This careful combination of grapes and oak aging adds layers of complexity while preserving the wine’s vibrant fruit character.
Appearance: Deep ruby with a slight purple rim, indicating its youth and concentration.
Aroma: Intense aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and black cherries, intertwined with notes of vanilla, cocoa, and a hint of smoky oak. There’s also a delicate herbal undertone, with hints of fresh thyme and anise.
Taste: Bold and fruit-forward, with rich flavours of dark berry compote, cassis, and a touch of red currant. The fruit is complemented by a subtle spiciness and notes of liquorice, leather, and toasted oak. The wine is full-bodied yet fresh, with polished tannins that give it structure without being overly aggressive.
Finish: Long and smooth, with lingering flavours of dark fruit, sweet spice, and a touch of mineral earthiness. The wine's acidity keeps the finish lively and balanced.
Pairings: Spiced lamb ribs with burnt maple, parsley, and hazelnut crumb. The rich, savoury lamb and sweet maple glaze will match the wine’s dark fruit and spice, while its acidity will cut through the richness.
Slow-cooked porchetta wrapped in jamon with cavolo nero and red wine jus. The wine’s ripe fruit and structured tannins will stand up to the fatty, savoury porchetta, while the red wine jus mirrors the wine’s depth and complexity.
