Château Montelena, known for its legendary Napa Valley Cabernet and Chardonnay, also crafts a remarkable Zinfandel. With origins tracing back to 1882, this historic estate in Calistoga lies at the foot of Mount Saint Helena, where volcanic soils and cooler microclimates contribute to the distinct character of their wines. While Napa Valley is better known for its Cabernet, the Calistoga region has long been home to some exceptional Zinfandel vineyards. Château Montelena’s Zinfandel focuses on balance, elegance, and structure, avoiding the jammy, high-alcohol style often associated with this varietal.

The 2016 vintage benefitted from near-perfect growing conditions. A mild summer allowed for even ripening, preserving the Zinfandel’s vibrant acidity and giving the wine more finesse and precision. The estate’s old vines, rooted in well-draining volcanic soils, add complexity and minerality, setting this Zinfandel apart from more fruit-forward expressions.

Appearance: Deep ruby with purple tinges around the rim, showing good concentration and clarity.

Aroma: Bright and expressive, with aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry, and plum, layered with brambly notes, pepper, and a hint of dried herbs. Subtle spicy oak and hints of vanilla and sweet tobacco round out the bouquet.

Taste: Medium to full-bodied, showcasing flavours of juicy blackberries, ripe raspberries, and dark cherries, complemented by notes of black pepper, anise, and cocoa. There’s a lovely underlying earthiness, reflective of the volcanic soils, with balanced acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively. The tannins are supple yet structured, adding to the wine’s overall harmony.

Finish: Smooth and elegant, with a long, lingering finish of dark fruit, baking spices, and a touch of smoky oak. The wine has great length and a refined texture that leaves a clean, mineral-driven impression.

Food Pairing: This Zinfandel is a great match for barbecued pork ribs with a smoky, sweet glaze, as the wine’s acidity and peppery spice complement the richness of the meat. It would also pair beautifully with roasted vegetable lasagne, where its fruit and herbaceous notes would enhance the dish’s savoury layers.
