Spottswoode, located in Napa Valley, California, is one of the most revered producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in the region, known for crafting wines of exceptional balance, depth, and elegance. The Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 continues the estate’s legacy of producing world-class wines, consistently receiving high praise from critics and collectors alike. Established in 1882, Spottswoode has been family-owned and operated since 1972, and its organically farmed vineyards have become a benchmark for excellence in Napa Valley winemaking.

The 2019 vintage benefited from nearly ideal growing conditions, offering a long, even ripening period. This wine is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in French oak for 20 months, allowing the wine to develop complexity and structure while retaining its vibrant fruit character.

Appearance: Deep ruby-purple, showing great concentration and vibrancy in the glass.

Aroma: The nose is rich and expressive, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum, complemented by notes of violets, graphite, and cedar. There are also subtle hints of dark chocolate, espresso, and a touch of sweet tobacco, adding to its complexity.

Taste: Full-bodied with a luxurious, velvety texture. The palate showcases ripe black fruit, such as cassis, blackberries, and black cherries, layered with notes of anise, dark chocolate, and a touch of oak spice. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, providing structure without overpowering the wine's fruit purity. There’s a refreshing acidity that lifts the wine, ensuring it remains balanced and lively despite its richness.

Finish: The finish is long, elegant, and complex, with lingering notes of blackcurrant, graphite, and a touch of cedar. The tannins remain firm but refined, promising excellent ageing potential over the next 15-20 years.

Food Pairing: Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes. A classic match would be a perfectly grilled ribeye steak, where the wine’s tannins and dark fruit complement the beef's char and richness. Another excellent pairing would be braised short ribs, where the wine’s structure and complexity balance the rich, slow-cooked flavours of the dish. It would also pair well with roasted lamb or even hard, aged cheeses like Pecorino or aged Gouda.
