Château Farluret, located in the Barsac appellation of the Sauternes region, is known for producing luscious dessert wines from Bordeaux’s signature blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. Barsac, while within the Sauternes region, is distinct for its limestone soils, which lend an additional freshness and minerality to its sweet wines. The 2019 vintage was particularly favourable, producing beautifully balanced wines with rich, concentrated sweetness, lively acidity, and remarkable complexity.

In classic Sauternes style, Château Farluret’s vines are affected by Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), a beneficial fungus that concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes, resulting in a luxurious and complex dessert wine with an intense, honeyed character.

Appearance: Golden amber, with brilliant clarity, reflecting the wine’s richness and youthful vibrancy.

Aroma: The nose is intensely aromatic, with rich notes of honey, apricot, and candied citrus peel, interwoven with floral hints of acacia and honeysuckle. There are underlying layers of dried tropical fruit—mango, pineapple—and a touch of vanilla and almond from oak ageing, adding complexity.

Taste: Lush and full-bodied, the palate is unctuous with flavours of ripe apricot, peach, and marmalade, balanced by honeyed notes of caramel and crème brûlée. The wine’s sweetness is beautifully offset by a fresh acidity that provides lift and keeps the palate from becoming overly heavy. A delicate minerality from the Barsac limestone soils adds an extra dimension, while the oak imparts a creamy, spicy richness.

Finish: Long and luxurious, with lingering flavours of honey, dried apricot, citrus zest, and a hint of toasted almond. The finish is clean and refreshing, with the wine’s bright acidity cutting through its sweetness and leaving a harmonious, balanced impression.

Pairings: Tempura duck eggs with spinach, olive soil, provolone, pecorino, manchego, chive, and truffle paprika emulsion. The wine’s sweetness and acidity will beautifully balance the richness of the dish, while its honeyed and nutty notes will complement the complex cheeses and truffle.

Foie gras with nashi jam and toasted crut. The luxurious texture and sweetness of the wine will elevate the rich, buttery foie gras, while its acidity cuts through the fat, making for an indulgent pairing.

Château Farluret Barsac Sauternes 2019 is a decadent dessert wine with layers of complexity and a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity. It’s perfect for pairing with rich, savoury dishes or classic desserts and can be enjoyed now or cellared for further development over the next 10–20 years.
