Château Montelena's Chardonnay gained global acclaim after its 1976 Judgement of Paris victory, where it outperformed some of the finest white Burgundies, making it a Napa Valley icon. Known for their restrained, Old World approach to winemaking, Château Montelena focuses on elegance and balance, allowing the terroir to shine through. Sourced from their estate vineyards in Calistoga, the volcanic soils and cooler microclimates help produce a refined, mineral-driven Chardonnay that stands out for its purity and precision. The 2019 vintage was particularly well-balanced due to the cooler growing season, which allowed for extended ripening and preservation of natural acidity.

In magnum format, the 2019 Chardonnay promises even greater aging potential, with the larger bottle allowing the wine to develop more slowly and gain complexity over time.

Appearance: Brilliant pale gold with a hint of green at the rim, showcasing its freshness and youth.

Aroma: Aromatic layers of green apple, pear, and lemon zest, mingling with floral notes of white blossom. Subtle hints of wet stone, vanilla, and a touch of hazelnut emerge from the restrained oak influence, enhancing the wine’s complexity without overshadowing its fruit character.

Taste: On the palate, the wine is crisp and vibrant, with flavours of citrus—lemon, lime, and tangerine—balanced by ripe orchard fruits like apple and pear. There’s a subtle creaminess, but the hallmark here is the wine’s minerality and bright acidity, which keep it refreshing and lively. The restrained oak ageing adds texture and depth without dominating the fresh fruit flavours.

Finish: Long, clean, and focused, with lingering notes of lemon zest, green apple, and a delicate touch of almond. The finish is driven by crisp acidity and a stony minerality, leaving a refreshing impression on the palate.

Food Pairing: This magnum is a perfect partner for butter-poached lobster, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness of the dish while complementing the delicate sweetness of the lobster. It would also pair beautifully with roast chicken with herbs, enhancing the savoury, earthy flavours and balancing the richness with its bright, zesty finish.
